Wedding Vows

A key part of the wedding service is the vows. Some people write their own vows while others select from previously written vows that reflect their own sentiments. Here is a list of vows I often give couples to choose from – or they can use it as a springboard as they think about how they would like to go about writing their own vows. (Many thanks to Nick and Katie who let me use this picture from their lovely wedding day nearly seven years ago in Colorado Springs.)

I give myself to you to be your wife/husband

To laugh with you in joy

To grieve with you in sorrow

To grow with you in love

Serving humankind in peace and hope

As long as we both shall live.

I, ________, give myself to you to be your (husband/wife), and these things I promise you: I will be faithful to you and honest with you; I will respect, trust, help and care for you; I will share my life with you; I will forgive you as we have been forgiven; and I will try with you better to understand ourselves, the world, and God; through the best and the worst of what is to come as long as we live.

I come here today, (name), to join my life to yours.

I pledge to be true to you, to respect you, and to grow with you through the years.

Time may pass, fortune may smile, trials may come; no matter what we may encounter together, I vow here that this love will be my only love.

I will make my home in your heart from this day forward.

_________, I give myself to you, to be your wife / husband.I promise before God and these witnesses to be your faithful husband / wife, to share with you in plenty and in want, in joy and in sorrow, in sickness and in health, to forgive and strengthen you, and to join with you so that together we may serve God and others as long as we both shall live.

I give myself to you, _______, to be your (wife, husband) – To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, for all of time and eternity, and from this day on I promise you my faithfulness.
